AI Killed the Video Star
The rise of AI video tools and what it means for the rest of us

Hello friends,
Welcome to another edition of AI for the Rest of Us.
Hey, have you noticed how so many videos out there, especially on social media, seem a bit off lately? Like something’s not quite right but you can’t put your finger on it? Well, there’s a reason for that. And it’s not because you’re missing out on a weird trend. It’s likely because AI is now creating those videos, and it’s getting impressively good at it.
This week, we’re exploring how this technology works, what it means for the rest of us, and why your Instagram feed is about to get a whole lot weirder – maybe weirder than it already is.
We’ll also look at the major players in this space (spoiler: Google just dropped something big) and what you can actually do with these tools today.
Fair warning: some of what I’m about to share might make you uncomfortable. It should. We’re not just talking about cool tech here – we’re talking about the end of “pics or it didn’t happen” as proof of anything.
But it’s not all doom and gloom – you know I never am. This technology is also opening doors for creators, educators, and dreamers who’ve never had access to video production before. Like most things AI, it’s complicated.
Buckle up because here we go!
– Kyser
P.S. Just a reminder that we’ve got our mid-year break come up, so we’ll see you back here in four weeks on July 18th.

In the Know
Pause for a moment and think about what you’ve done today on your phone. Chances are you’ve watched at least one video – maybe a TikTok dance, a YouTube tutorial, or just a funny Instagram reel. We’re consuming more video than ever, with the average person now watching nearly four hours of online video per day (!!!) – and about an hour of that time is consumed on social media platforms.
That’s wild in and of itself. But here’s where things get interesting for the rest of us: the videos filling your feed are more and more likely to be generated by AI – aka not real, aka fake. You can now create very good quality videos from nothing more than text descriptions (aka prompts). No editing involved. No enhancements needed. Anyone in a mom’s basement can whip them up from scratch in minutes. And while the results aren’t Hollywood-ready yet, they’re getting scary good, scary fast.

It’s Play Time
That’s all for this edition of AI for the Rest of Us. Keep an eye out for slightly-off videos in your feed. Once you start looking, you might notice them everywhere. And if you come across one and need a second opinion on fake/not-fake, send it my way and I’ll take a look.
Just a reminder that we’ve got our mid-year break coming up, so we’ll see you back here July 18th. Until then, stay curious.
