Is AI really coming for our jobs?

Yes, no, and maybe. How's that for reassuring?

Hello friends,

Welcome to another edition of AI for the Rest of Us.

This week we’re covering a topic that hits close to home for many of us – the white-collar job apocalypse. Is it really coming? Should I be concerned? What are the experts saying about it? We’re hoping to answer those questions and more.

But wait, haven’t we written about this before? And why now? Well, yes, we’ve written about it in Editions 14, 17, 24, and others. But we’ve never devoted a full edition to it – and because so much is changing so fast, we thought it would be a good time for a state of the union on white collar jobs, or what many call knowledge workers.

Let’s get into it.

In the Know

Big, Bold Statements
Back in May, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei shared a wild prediction: AI could wipe out half of entry-level white-collar jobs within five years and lead to 20% unemployment. He said companies and governments should stop “sugarcoating” the risks of widespread job replacement.

Ford CEO Jim Farley warned recently that “artificial intelligence is going to replace literally half of all white-collar workers in the US.”

Former Google executive Mo Gawdat is predicting most knowledge workers would be replaced in the next decade, citing his own startup that runs on just three people instead of the 350 developers it would have needed in the past.

I could go on. But you get the point. Business leaders are making big, bold statements about our jobs, and we’re sitting here wondering if it’s true and what we should do. My advice? Don’t panic just yet.
